The Distance Between Desire

‘My practice navigates the fragile terrain of unfulfilled longing, where desire persists despite its inherent impossibility. Drawing from the symbolic presence of the guinea fowl and the emotional undercurrents of Punjabi folklore, I construct a visual language rooted in quiet yearning. The bird emerges as a contemplative seeker. Its gaze fixed upon the moon, an eternal object of desire that remains just beyond reach. This tension between aspiration and denial echoes the tragic poetics of Punjabi love legends, where devotion is often intertwined with separation and loss. Within this framework, the figure of the groom appears not as a bearer of celebration, but as a spectral remnant of those narratives. Suspended in a barren landscape, holding a wedding veil that signifies both union and its quiet undoing. The bird and the groom coexist as parallel embodiments of longing, forming a shared narrative that dwells in the space between hope and collapse. Through this interplay, my work reflects on the beauty and burden of desire, its persistence, its futility and the silent resilience it demands.’
