Biography

Syed Sadequain Ahmed Naqvi was born in India in 1930 and passed away in Pakistan in 1987.  Sadequain is revered as one of the most famous 20th century painters and calligraphers of Pakistan. In the early 1960s, Sadequain moved to Paris where he soon established a foot in the French art circles. There he could record his first successes and was compared with major artists such as Picasso. During this time, he also worked as an illustrator and was awarded the ‘Laureate Biennale de Paris’.

Sadequain was responsible for the renaissance of Islamic calligraphy in Pakistan. He was one of the greatest calligraphers of Pakistan and helped transform the art of calligraphy into serious expressionist paintings. He claimed that his transformation into a calligrapher was manifested by divine inspiration.
